Chemical sunscreens V's Mineral sunscreens?
All sunscreens are not created equal, so choosing the right one is a big part of sun safety.
The sunscreen you put on you and your kids’ bodies day in and day out doesn’t just evaporate into thin air. Where does that white, skin-protecting cream go?
It’s either absorbed into your body (chemicals and all), washed off into the water you swim in, or both. That’s precisely why safe sunscreen matters. Because when sunscreen absorbs into your skin, it can directly impact your health.
And when sunscreen washes off into the ocean water you swim in, it affects the coral reefs, the fish and other sea creatures.
Chemical sunscreens have ingredients (oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate) that may potentially cause health problems. According to some recent research they seep through the skin into the bloodstream after only a couple hours. These chemicals persist in the blood for up to seven days and exceed, by up to 40 times, the allowed limits.
Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, use two natural minerals - zinc oxide and titanium dioxide - as active ingredients. These minerals simply sit on top of your skin and protect it by reflecting away UV rays. The American authorities (FDA) have defined these filters generally regarded as safe and effective.
So, mineral sunscreen is the way to go!

Words below from Alessandro Mancini (Co-Founder of Sol de Ibiza):
"Water has been my life since my early years. Water is my element, my passion. Water has been my job for many years.
I moved to Ibiza in 2015 as a deliberate shift away from my previous 100-flights-a-year career.
I fell in love with the beautiful deep Mediterranean waters, so I started swimming in open water every day in every condition all year around.
The island gets extremely busy in the summer and one day I was finishing a long swim and passing a point, I clearly remember the smell of disgusting chemicals.
To be sincere sitting on the beach with my family I never actually thought about how the chemicals from the sunscreen products could affect the quality of the water.
I knew about natural sunscreen from my wife. She’s Australian and she grew up in a country with much more awareness about skin problems.
One day a friend of mine came to me with the idea of creating a natural sunscreen, I embraced the Sol de Ibiza project straight away and through some basic research I quickly realised how chemical free products would be beneficial not only for the skin but also for the sea I love to swim in.
To make it happen the first step was the selection of the ingredients, we sourced local Aloe Vera from Ibiza ecological Centre Casita Verde and we found a lab that was willing to work with us to create our vision.
A sunscreen made by natural ingredients only, which is good for kids, adults and the environment.
What we definitely didn’t want, was to produce another piece of plastic that could find his way into the sea, that’s why Sol de Ibiza is completely plastic-free."
