We plant trees for every order!🌳
I'm so excited to announce that we have partnered with One Tree Planted and from the start of January 2020, we will be planting a tree for EVERY order! 🌳
I have always wanted to create a business that gives back to nature and I am so happy to now have reforestation as an integral part of our business model at The Earth Shop.
Trees are so important as they clean our air and water, they provide homes for wildlife and contribute to our health and wellbeing and planting trees creates jobs for social impact too.
Trees are also important in the fight against the climate crisis as they absorb harmful carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and every tree we plant will make a positive impact on nature, people and our planet.
We are able to select where we would like the trees to be planted and for the next few months I have decided that this will be in Australia! 🦘
This year's fire season in Australia is one of the largest natural disasters in history. It has brought about unprecedented destruction as wildfires have spread across every Australian state, burning up nearly 6 million hectares (15 million acres) of bush as of January 2020.
The devastation witnessed in the state of New South Wales is nearly unfathomable - 3.6 million hectares (8.8 million acres) have been lost, over 2,400 homes destroyed or damaged, and 24 people have been killed.
New South Wales is home to some of the most iconic of Australia's wildlife - koalas, wombats, and kangaroos to name a few - and their habitat is rapidly declining.
How will it work?
At the moment in Australia the focus is on managing and mitigating the fires at hand, protecting people's properties, and assessing the environmental and community impacts. However, in due time, they will need plenty of support to restore this landscape back to health.
Once the fires have settled and the land is ready to take on new trees, One Tree Planted are forecasting to restore over 6 million trees across Australia in 2020. While trees for this project will not go in the ground until the fires have ended and the soil repaired, by supporting this project now we are making sure that partners in Australia are ready to hit the ground running and repair their beautiful and iconic landscape.
Trees are chosen that will bring the greatest overall benefit to the region. This includes various types of native trees and companion plants, depending on the specific needs of each section of habitat being restored across New South Wales and Australia.
About One Tree Planted:
One Tree Planted is a non-profit organisation based in Vermont, USA. As an environmental charity, they are dedicated to making it easier for individuals and businesses to give back to the environment, create a healthier climate, protect biodiversity and help reforestation efforts around the world. All by planting trees!
They started in 2014, and have more than doubled the number of trees planted year on year. Today, they now work with amazing reforestation partners in North America, South America, Asia, and Africa who help get trees in the ground to restore forests after fires and floods, create jobs, build communities, and protect habitat for biodiversity.
In 2018, One Tree Planted were able to get more trees in the ground than ever before - 1.3 million! They pool the donations for each project and send the funds to their reforestation partners. They vet the partners to ensure that they maintain a tree survival rate of 80-90%. Depending on the project, the partners choose the best tree species to plant and work with local communities to get them in the ground. Planting typically happens in the rainy season when the soil is wet and provides optimal conditions for tree survival. Once all the trees are in the ground they send out a report highlighting the impact of your trees.
Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. They also provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines.
